I’ve never had a big closet but in the past year or so, I’ve definitely come a long way in terms of finding a style that represents how I want to dress but also, the whole concept of capsule wardrobe has taught me how to structure my wardrobe properly. What is a capsule wardrobe? For me it’s just my wardrobe. One that consists solely of pieces that I love. And what I love is quality, elegance and monochrome.
Does it feel limiting? Or better yet boring? I’ve got about 40 pieces in total at the moment and for me that’s plenty. In fact, every time I see people do fashion hauls on monthly basis I wonder what they actually do with all of it. All in all it’s all about your mindset and your individual needs. The key thing is you can personalise it and so everybody’s wardrobe is different. It reflects your personality and your lifestyle.
I come from a place of already owning a rather minimalistic number of clothes in a neutral colour palette. I don’t have my capsule because ‘it makes dressing in the morning so much easier’ or ‘I don’t have to think about what I’m wearing’. I love style and one of my favourite parts of the day is selecting my outfit and then catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror and thinking, ‘that looks darn good’. Now, despite the fact that having a minimal wardrobe simply comes natural to me, it is a process to complete but a very rewarding one.
Capsule wardrobe is a selection of high quality timeless pieces that can be matched together effortlessly. But don’t just say ‘effortless chic’, find pieces that represent it instead. You don’t want to have any pieces in your wardrobe that you kind of like, you only want pieces that suit you and you love wearing. Your aim is basically to be able to put an outfit without having to wonder whether that pair of trousers will look good with that top. In the ultimate capsule, you will always feel and look your best.
If you’ve found this concept alien, I hope you get a better sense of what it is. There are probably plenty of these posts out there, Into Mind being my personal favourite, but I hope at least to some extent you found this interesting. This is just an introduction and if you’re looking for tips on how to build a capsule, that will be up on Friday.
